Minnick Web Services sponsored the Niche Digital Conference in Minneapolis September 21-22, and we had a great time. Chris Minnick, Dave Kalman, and I staffed our sponsor booth and attended sessions for two intense days. The official conference party at Brit’s Pub was a hoot. Chris tried his hand at lawn bowling before the clouds and thunder rolled in, bringing the party back indoors.

Back at the conference, our ten-foot tall Tyrannosaurus Rex was a big hit. If everyone else has a huge inflated dinosaur next year, just remember that we started the trend. We had a lot of enlightening conversations with attendees about the challenges of transitioning their niche magazines into the digital realm. We met some great people and are looking forward to working with some of them in the future.

Chris was a panelist for the “Future of the Digital Edition Roundtable” on Monday afternoon, along with representatives from Texterity, NXTbook, ePub Xpress, and Hallmark Data Systems. Chris provided a counterpoint to the digital edition vendors, pointing out that digital editions are a transitional technology and what really counts in the long run is keeping your online content in a flexible format that is usable for a variety of purposes, from reading on mobile devices to populating an RSS feed, and whatever else the future may have in store. When pressed by Wayne Metcalfe of NXTbook on what to tell advertisers when their print advertisements don’t make into the online version of a magazine, Chris pointed out that “print ads look like hell on the web,” and suggested working with the advertiser to develop something more appropriate and effective for the medium.

All in all, a great time was had at NDC 2009, and we look forward to next year!
